About Us |
|||
| From regional folk styles to intricate classical styles, dance is an integral part of South Asian culture. Classical styles incorporate gestures and facial expressions to tell stories in addition to technicaly complex dance steps. With the penetration of Western elements into Indian culture, dance styles are becoming more fused. Modern elements of Jazz and Hip-Hop are becoming more visible in South Asian dance. | |||
| Over the years, PENNaach has exhibited the vast diversity of South Asian dance. By bringing ancient traditions together with new trends, PENNaach continues to explore the countless approcahes taken with the art. Some of our most memorable dances have included a traditional diya (candle) dance which highlights three classical dance styles (Bharathanatyam, Kathak and Odissi), lavni, a style which is typical to coastal fishing communities of western India, giddha, an upbeat Punjabi folk dance, garba, a popular Gujarati folk dance, as well as modern items such as Madonna's Om Shanti. |
