About Us

PENNaach was founded in October 1997 for the purpose of promoting South Asian culture both within and outside the University of Pennsylvania through various forms of traditional, classical, and modern dance.

Dance is an integral and vital part of South Asian culture. There are innumerable distinct styles that vary across regions and time periods. Classical styles incorporate technically complex hand gestures, foot work, and facial expressions that tell stories, while folk styles incorporate vivacious, joyful movements and regional traditions. With the penetration of Western elements into Indian culture, dance styles are becoming more fused. Elements of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Ballet are becoming more visible in South Asian dance.

Over the years, PENNaach has exhibited the vast diversity of South Asian dance. By bringing ancient traditions together with new trends, PENNaach continues to explore and innovate through South Asian dance traditions. Some of our most memorable dances have included styles such as traditional Bharatanatyam, Bollywood, Garba, Raas, Bhangra, Kathak, Yoga, Hip-Hop and Modern.
